„Keeping Children and Young People Safe Online” was the subject of an international conference organised by NASK (Research and Academic Computer Network) and the Nobody’s Children Foundation under the honorary patronage of GIODO.
It is already the third time this event is organised within the framework of the European Commission’s Safer Internet Plus Programmme co-financed from the EU resources. This edition of the Conference focused mainly on issues such as ensuring security in social networks or educating children on Internet safety.
Education on personal data protection and the right to privacy has been one of Michał Serzycki’s priorities since the moment of his appointment for the position of the Inspector General for Personal Data Protection (GIODO) in July 2006. In the times of fast development of modern technologies and common use of the Internet, mobile telephones, palmtops and this type of devices by children, it becomes especially important to inform the users about the related risks.
We are not always aware of the fact that using such devices we leave a „digital shadow” behind us, which allows to track almost each our step. We can be identified on the Internet by computer’s IP number, cookies, nicks or e-mail address. We leave the information about ourselves when shopping online, participating in discussion forums, social networking sites or auction sites, etc. What’s interesting, our behaviours and interests can be tracked even based on our mouse clicks or eyeball moves on a website.
Therefore, discussion on safe communication by electronic means becomes especially important. It concerns in particular their youngest users, being unaware of the risks.
The participation of GIODO, Michał Serzycki, in the Conference is aimed at presenting the issue of the right to privacy and personal data protection on the Internet, in particular social networking sites.
