There is a need for a debate on the scope of data contained in an identity card – says GIODO.
This opinion was expressed by Michał Serzycki, the Inspector General for Personal Data Protection (GIODO) during the interview given to Anna Laszuk from Radio TOK FM.
The journalist asked him whether encoding much information in the new ID card was safe. GIODO explained that creating large databases always entailed bigger risks. First of all, leak of data contained in such a database would lead to serious consequences. Moreover, comprehensive databases created by public authorities are a titbit for private companies.
Technology development is very quick and technical novelties sometimes make our life easier – said Michał Serzycki. – It’s hard for me to be the one restraining this development, but it is my obligation to call for applying such solutions which ensure data security.
In GIODO’s view before deciding on the scope of information to be included in the identity card a public debate on this matter should be held and a happy medium should be struck in order to balance our comfort, safety and the right to privacy.
