Agreement with the Internet industry, 28 January 2010

The conclusion of the Agreement between GIODO and the Interactive Advertising Bureau Polska was one of the most important events accompanying the celebration of the 4th Data Protection Day. The aim of the Agreement concluded by GIODO with the Internet industry is ensuring that ISPs comply with the principles of personal data protection in their activity, and developing a best practice code shall contribute to achieving this aim. Whereas, Internet media and other companies from the industry wish to emphasise by means of concluding the Agreement that they care about due protection of personal data, so that persons using various contents and services online can feel safe.

Before signing the Agreement Michał Serzycki, the Inspector General for Personal Data Protection, said that “although the Internet is undoubtedly our window on the world, despite measurable benefits its use entails as well many risks for the protection of personal data and the right of privacy. He gave as an example the storage and analysis by ISPs of our websites visits history, without our knowledge and consent.

- Besides, many a time we realise that if something happens in the virtual world, it can have serious consequences in the real world. But in fact there is only one world – said Michał Serzycki. – I hope that thanks to concluding the Agreement, which shall contribute to developing a best practice code, we all will better and safer use the Internet – he added.

The solutions leading to safer use of the Internet include not only GIODO’s educational activities addressed to Internet users, but also activities such as undertaking cooperation with ISPs, which resulted in concluding the Agreement with IAB Polska. ISPs commited themselves in the Agreement to ensure proper application of the provisions on personal data protection.

- Companies associated in IAB Polska, including the biggest Internet media, draw special attention to adequate protection of their users’ personal data. Each person entrusting us his/her data is for us a precious customer for whom we have to take care of. We would like this Agreement to show that we care about the security of our users, on one hand, and to contribute to developing a best practice code, which allows to protect personal data online even better, on the other one – commented Piotr Kowalczyk, President of the Board of IAB Polska.

The Agreement for the benefit of disseminating the right to personal data protection and the right to privacy as well as developing the best practice code was signed by Michał Serzycki, the Inspector General for Personal Data Protection, and by Piotr Kowalczyk, President of the Board, and Szymon Szmigiel, Member of the Board, - on the part of IAB Polska.
