TVP INFO asks about data protection on social networking sites, 11 August 2010

Concepts related to data protection which were created before the Internet existed need to be adapted to the new circumstances – said Wojciech Wiewiórowski, the Inspector General for Personal Data Protection.

Jan Ordyński of TVP INFO asked GIODO about personal data protection in the world of new technologies.

Wojciech Wiewiórowski, the Inspector General for Personal Data Protection (GIODO) explained that in the times of rapid technological progress, social awareness to data protection plays an important park. In this respect, the situation in Poland, as compared with other European countries, is very good.

Another thing is that the concepts related to data protection were created before the Internet became widely used. That is why at present it is very difficult to answer numerous questions – for example to ascertain the identity of data controller on social networking site – using the old concepts. However, we need to keep asking questions and looking for answers, as well as review the law and to change it if necessary – said Wiewiórowski.
