Only an independent, strong and effective DPA can efficiently protect our rights.

That opinion was shared by all participants of the Conference „Personal Data Protection in the Face of Challenges” held on 24 March 2017 in Krakow. The event, organised by the Inspector General for Personal Data Protection (GIODO), with the participation of the senators from the Human Rights, the Rule of Law and Petitions Committee of the Polish Senate, gathered speakers representing the scientific community, business, NGOs, as well as representatives of Data Protection Authorities from the Visegrad Group countries.

In the Conference opening speech Dr Edyta Bielak-Jomaa, the Inspector General for Personal Data Protection (GIODO), emphasised that currently we are in the particular period of more and more intensive preparations for the beginning of the application – as of 25 May 2018 – of the General Data Protection Regulation, which will change the data protection system in the EU Member States in a special way. – One of the main objectives of this reform is to strengthen the position of independent DPAs – she indicated.

The discussions during the Krakow meeting focused on how to achieve this objective.
