New technologies used in monitoring limit citizens’ right to privacy
Rapid development and use of new technologies create a need to introduce more detailed legal framework for personal data protection – this was the most important conclusion from the “Right to Privacy in Surveillance Society” conference organized by Inspector General for Personal Data Protection (GIODO).
Its participants discussed, among other things, the development of CCTV and their use by the employers to control the activity of their workers, while they are only allowed to use such kind of monitoring for order and safety surveillance.
Inspector General for Personal Data Protection, Mr Micha³ Serzycki, claimed that there was a need to adopt a separate Act on monitoring – We deal with monitoring systems everywhere: in the streets, in shops. This is connected with data collection, and companies are obliged to inform the persons whose data they hold about their rights. But how are they supposed to reach the people monitored in the streets every day? – asked Serzycki.
