Pilot programme „Your data –your concern.”
The informational and promotional conference held on 28 October 2009 in Gliwice initiated the pilot programme „Your data –your concern. Effective protection of personal data. Educational activity addressed to students and teachers”.
Honorary patronage of the event was taken by the Commissioner for Children’s Rights and the President of the City of Gliwice. Rafał Lew-Starowicz, Director of the Team of Children Help Line at the Bureau of the Commissioner for Children’s Rights, read the letter from Marek Michalak, the Commissioner for Children’s Rights. In the letter, the Commissioner for Children’s Rights stressed a very important role of teachers in educating pupils to make them aware of their rights and obligations, and presented many risks related to reckless approach to personal data protection. He also referred to interesting results of the research “Child Online”, presenting many appalling facts, very important in order to effectively fight with contemporary reality, where children too easily share information on themselves.
Also Michał Serzycki, the Inspector General for Personal Data Protection addressed the representatives of educational institutions. In his speech, he gave reasons for the involvement of his authority in this important project, focusing on the need to reach students and teachers with the knowledge on personal data protection.
Monika Krasińska, Director of the Jurisdiction, Legislation and Complaints Department of the GIODO Bureau, presented a lecture on “Personal data protection in the activity of schools”, and Piotr Drobek, Deputy Director of the Social Education and International Cooperation Department of the GIODO Bureau, conducted an object lesson on personal data protection for middle schools’ students. The lesson was aimed at its evaluation by students and invited teachers, as well as discussion on the presented activity with teachers.
The educational activity initiated by the Conference and addressed to teachers and students of middle schools is aimed at raising their knowledge on personal data protection and every person’s right to privacy. The programme provides for cooperation on partnership basis between self-government centres for teachers’ vocational training and the Inspector General for Personal Data Protection. It comprises two stages. In stage I, teachers from schools covered by the programme shall be trained. Stage II shall consist in inclusion to school curricula of the issues related to personal data protection. Within the framework of the pilot programme, plans of lessons for teachers and students will be drawn up. Moreover, evaluation report on the undertaken activities and Poland-wide educational programme will be developed.
