GIODO was elected Vice-Chair of the Article 29 Working Party – European Commission’s independent European advisory body on data protection and privacy.
As a result of electing the Polish Inspector General for Personal Data Protection, Mr Michał Serzycki, for the post of the Vice-Chair of the Article 29 Working Party, the number of Poles in management of EU institutions increased.
The election was possible due to the position gained by GIODO among data protection commissioners from Central and Eastern European countries, when continuing their regular meetings initiated in 2001.
Gaining support allowing to apply for one of significant UE posts related to personal data protection is a great success, considering the fact that the Working Party is composed of one representative from each Member State, a representative of the European Data Protection Supervisor and a representative of the European Commission.
As the Working Party was set up under Article 29 of Directive 95/46/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 24 October 1995 on the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data, it is in short called Art. 29 Working Party. It constitutes an independent EC’s body on data protection and privacy.
The most important issues recently tackled by the Art. 29 Working Party include:
The election took place at the Art. 29 Working Party’s plenary meeting held on 15-16 February 2010 in Brussels.
Mr Jacob Kohnstamm, Chairman of the Dutch Data Protection Authority, was elected Chair of the Art. 29 Working Party. Mr Artemi Rallo Lombarte took a post of the second Vice-Chair.
